The Palmetto Hotel, Charleston: A Refined, Lowcountry Stay with Residential Charm

Charleston does many things well—but perhaps none more effortlessly than hospitality that feels both polished and personal.

The Palmetto Hotel captures that balance beautifully.

Set along East Bay Street in the city’s historic French Quarter, this 45-room boutique hotel blends classic Southern architecture with a distinctly residential approach to design. It’s the kind of place that feels immediately familiar—in the best way—while still offering the elevated details you expect from a thoughtfully designed stay.

We visited in late May to celebrate our anniversary, and the setting felt entirely fitting: warm, layered, and quietly celebratory. Truly, the weather was so similar to our Kiawah Island wedding weekend, it felt like no time had passed.

The Palmetto Hotel — Checking In

Opened in 2023, The Palmetto Hotel is owned by Dreamscape Companies and managed by Aimbridge Hospitality. It has all the perks of a new-build—smooth elevator, soundproofing—but the interior design mixes in enough antiques to give it a lived-in feel. And it leans into Charleston’s history with a sense of ease that avoids feeling overly themed.

The lobby sets the tone immediately.

Stepping inside feels like entering an enclosed Southern verandah—one that has been carefully designed rather than inherited.

Impossibly tall wall panels are painted in a dreamy cream to cool green ombre reminiscent of an Impressionist painting. A giant arched mirror reflects both light and the rhythm of East Bay Street outside. A gilded palmetto chandelier drips with crystals overhead, catching your attention in the most cinematic way. Above that, ceiling beams are painted in the traditional porch color “haint” blue— solidifying the outside-inside verandah impression of this front space.

Seating is arranged in intimate groupings, anchored by antique furnishings. Deep narrow cognac leather barrel chairs share space with dainty cane chairs. Sofas are reupholstered in vintage Isle of Palms postcards superimposed on the custom upholstery. The effect is layered but approachable. Elegant, but not precious.

A full bar just inside the entry reinforces the mood: this is a space meant for lingering.

The overall design reads as classic Southern charm reinterpreted through a contemporary lens—what I’d call residential chic with Lowcountry roots.

The Rooms

We stayed in the penthouse suite—a true private oasis.

At approximately 1,000 square feet, with an additional 500-square-foot rooftop terrace, the space feels expansive without losing its sense of intimacy.

The layout is particularly well considered. The sleeping area is subtly separated by a dividing wall with dual entry points, creating privacy while maintaining flow. Floor-to-ceiling windows wrap the space, offering panoramic views while the top-floor location and remote-controlled blinds ensure a sense of seclusion.

Design details carry the narrative:

  • Ticking stripe wallpaper and sage green accents lend a tailored Southern feel
  • Mid-tone walnut flooring grounds the space
  • Bottle green lacquered bar cabinetry paired with brass hardware and a matte black faucet creates a moment that feels distinctly custom

The terrace extends the experience outdoors, with multiple zones for dining, lounging, and quiet morning coffee.

The bed delivers on comfort—plush, layered, and anchored by a tufted sage headboard that ties seamlessly into the room’s palette.

Bathrooms are equally generous:

  • Floor-to-ceiling Carrara marble
  • Matte brass rain shower
  • Curved-edge mirror with integrated shelving (a small but thoughtful detail)

And then, the finishing touches:

  • Bamford amenities, including a “B Silent” pillow mist
  • Eye masks for sleeping in
  • Dyson hair dryer
  • Custom robes
  • Nespresso setup
  • Travel clothes steamers available upon request (a detail seasoned travelers will appreciate)

It’s a space designed to be lived in—not just passed through.

Where to Eat (and Drink)

While The Palmetto doesn’t have a full-service restaurant, it leans into what it does offer—and does it well.

The lobby bar is both a guest amenity and a local draw. A sign outside boldly claims the “best espresso martinis in town”—and, to their credit, it holds up. Topped with an alcohol-infused foam, it’s the kind of cocktail that feels both indulgent and well-executed.

There’s also a bit of insider charm here:
Ask for a drink using the phrase “Bless Your Heart”, and you may receive a small surcee—a Southern-style “just because” gift.

For meals, the hotel’s location does most of the work for you:

  • Amen Street Fish & Raw Bar
  • High Cotton
  • Revival
  • Slightly North of Broad
  • Fleet Landing (just behind the hotel, directly on the water)

And each is comfortably walkable.

Service & Experience

Service at The Palmetto is polished, though more reserved in tone.

Interactions are consistently courteous and efficient, with a slightly more hands-off approach than some boutique properties. For some travelers, that discretion will feel like a benefit—particularly if you prefer to move at your own pace.

Where the experience truly shines is in the in-room touches.

Returning in the evening to a softly lit suite, with the bed turned down, robes neatly placed, and slippers waiting at the bedside, creates a quiet sense of ritual—one that elevates the stay without drawing attention to itself.

What to Do (Nearby)

Location is one of The Palmetto’s strongest assets.

From the front door, you’re within easy walking distance of:

  • Waterfront Park & Pineapple Fountain
  • Rainbow Row
  • Charleston City Market
  • King Street shopping

It’s an ideal base for first-time visitors and return travelers alike—central without feeling chaotic.

Insider Moments & Unexpected Highlights

There’s a subtle confidence to The Palmetto.

It doesn’t rely on excess amenities or over-programming. Instead, it focuses on atmosphere—on creating spaces that feel both elevated and familiar.

It’s in the way the lobby invites conversation.

In the layered textiles and antiques that feel collected rather than installed.

In the quiet luxury of a well-prepared room at the end of the day.

Quick Tips

  • Book the penthouse if available—it’s a true standout.
  • Take advantage of the bikes for exploring the city.
  • Plan dinners in advance—Charleston’s best restaurants book quickly.
  • Enjoy the lobby bar at least once—it’s part of the experience.

Final Thoughts: A Residential Take on Charleston Luxury

The Palmetto Hotel offers a version of Charleston that feels both elevated and approachable.

It’s not about spectacle—it’s about setting. About atmosphere. About the quiet confidence of a space that knows exactly what it is.

And in a city known for its charm, that restraint feels like a luxury in itself.
