A Refined Escape to Big Sky, Montana

Big Sky, Montana feels like a landscape written in light.

Golden grasslands stretch toward distant peaks. Pine-scented air drifts through quiet valleys. And when the sun sets, the mountains glow in rose-gold alpenglow against an impossibly wide sky.

It’s the kind of place that slows time. Where mornings begin with crisp mountain air and evenings end beside a crackling fire beneath a canopy of stars.

After falling in love with the landscapes featured in the television series Yellowstone, we decided to head west for a short reset before the busy fall season. Three days in Big Sky turned out to be exactly the kind of retreat we didn’t realize we needed.

Where We Stayed: Montage Big Sky

A quick flight from Indianapolis to Chicago, then onward to Bozeman brought us within striking distance of the mountains. From there, the drive to Big Sky takes about 45 minutes through a sweeping valley framed by tall pines and distant ridgelines.

Our home for the next few days was Montage Big Sky.

If you’re unfamiliar with Montage Hotels, it’s a boutique luxury hotel group with only a handful of properties worldwide. Each one is designed to reflect its setting through architecture, local materials, and curated experiences.

The Big Sky property feels like a modern interpretation of a classic mountain lodge — expansive windows framing the surrounding peaks, natural wood and stone interiors, and a quiet sense of refined comfort throughout the property. Where Modern Heritage design leans into rustic refinement.

It’s the kind of place that encourages you to slow down and stay a while.

The sweeping mountains and open skies of Big Sky, Montana create one of the most breathtaking landscapes in the American West.

How to Spend Three Days in Big Sky

The magic of Big Sky lies in the landscape itself, so the best itinerary centers around time outdoors.

Hiking and Exploring

One of our favorite experiences was hiking the Founder’s Loop trail directly from the Montage property. The route climbs just enough to feel invigorating without becoming strenuous, and the views of Lone Mountain and the surrounding valley are breathtaking.

At one point during the hike, Dr. Kahn paused, looked out across the landscape, and said:

“I’m not thinking about anything right now.”

For most of us, that kind of mental quiet is rare — and deeply restorative.

Another beautiful walk is Ousel Falls, a short but scenic trail leading to a waterfall surrounded by towering pines. From there, it’s possible to continue walking into the town of Big Sky itself.

Outdoor Adventures

For those wanting a more adventurous itinerary, the area offers endless possibilities.

Visitors can arrange guided excursions through the hotel concierge, including:

• fly fishing on the Gallatin River
• horseback riding through alpine meadows
• day trips into nearby Yellowstone National Park
• archery lessons and guided hikes

Even a relaxed day on property offers plenty of opportunities to take in the incredible landscape.

Wherever you go, the mountains and open skies remain the true stars of the experience.

Dining in Big Sky

One of the most memorable aspects of the trip was the emphasis on local ingredients and regional flavors.

Fans of Yellowstone may already know that the chef who appears in the series — Gabriel “Gator” Guilbeau — served as the real-life chef for the cast and crew during filming. His cooking highlights the rich culinary traditions of the region, with a focus on game meats and local produce.

During our stay, we embraced the same spirit.

Huckleberries — a beloved regional fruit — appear everywhere, from cocktails to desserts and savory glazes. We enjoyed dishes featuring elk, venison, bison, and fresh trout sourced from local waters.

At Montage Big Sky, two standout restaurants are:

Alpenglow
A relaxed setting with mountain views and an all-day menu featuring regional ingredients.

Cortina
A more elevated dining experience that blends Northern Italian influences with Montana’s seasonal bounty.

For another memorable meal, head to nearby Lone Mountain Ranch. Their restaurant, Horn & Cantle, offers a refined interpretation of classic lodge cuisine — hearty, flavorful, and deeply rooted in the landscape.

One cocktail worth noting: the Barrel Racer, a smooth blend of coffee-infused vermouth, maple syrup, bitters, bourbon, and orange zest.

Dangerously good.

Evenings in Big Sky

When the sun dips behind the mountains, the atmosphere shifts into something quieter and more intimate.

Live music drifts through the bar at Alpenglow most evenings, often country or western — fitting for a place where cowboy culture still shapes daily life.

Outdoor fire pits across the property invite guests to linger with a drink and watch the stars emerge overhead. Many resorts in the area, including Montage and Lone Mountain Ranch, offer evening s’mores bars — a nostalgic campfire ritual elevated with mountain views.

One night during our stay coincided with a full moon rising over the Spanish Peaks.

The moonlight was so bright it almost outshone the stars — a reminder that sometimes the simplest moments in nature can be the most memorable.

A Place That Resets the Pace

Big Sky has a way of quieting the mind.

The sweeping landscape, the scent of pine in the air, the absence of urban noise — together they create a rare sense of spaciousness, both physically and mentally.

For travelers seeking a blend of wilderness and luxury, it’s a destination that offers both in equal measure.

Three days was enough to fall in love with the place.

But it also left us with a feeling that Big Sky is the kind of landscape that invites you back again and again.
