Halloween at Château Kahn: Dark Academia Halloween Decor Tour

It’s Friday the 13th in October — the perfect day for a Halloween house tour.

Halloween at Château Kahn
Each year our home transforms with a slightly different Halloween decorating theme. Explore the evolving Halloween decor throughout Château Kahn.

This year’s Halloween decorating leans into a dark academia mood: mossy cloches, velvet textures, silver insects, and candlelight layered across the house.

Let’s start where the theme first appeared — the dining room table.

Halloween House Decor Tour begins at the outside entry.
Tombstones, twisted trees, lanterns, and spooky elements set the Halloween scene.

Dark Academia Halloween Tablescape

The dining room table was the starting point for this year’s Halloween decor.

One morning in late September I suddenly imagined the glass cloches I usually use during the holidays transformed into something darker and moodier — moss, mushrooms, dried flowers, maybe a few curious insects tucked inside.

Instead of a tablecloth, I wanted the warm wood of the table fully visible. A deep velvet runner felt like the right solution, adding richness without hiding the surface beneath.

Silver insect napkin rings became the perfect finishing detail. There’s something about insects that feels strangely appropriate for Halloween decor — just the right balance of eerie and elegant.

Everything else on the table came from pieces we already had in our Halloween decor collection. When the storage boxes come down each year, the dining room is always a key focus for assembling little vignettes.

Moody Halloween Decor in the Pretty Room

If you’ve read my Christmas house tours before, you may already know how the Pretty Room earned its name. When my husband’s children were younger, this formal living room was off limits — though they were allowed to admire it from the entryway. The nickname stuck.

This year the room leans into a rich color palette of black, brass, burgundy, and yellow-orange.

The mantel is filled with brass candlesticks originally collected for a friend’s wedding, now topped with black taper candles for the season. I also tried something new this year: instead of placing garland on top of the mantel, I suspended it just beneath the shelf using small Command hooks.

The effect completely changed the look of the fireplace and allowed the candlesticks to remain the focal point.

The garland itself came from Grandin Road several years ago and still holds up beautifully.

On the opposite side of the room, dark orange lights glow across another grouping of brass and black decor. Amber and rust tones appear here alongside a few unexpected additions — including glossy red apples that give the display a slightly mischievous “Evil Queen” feeling.

Sometimes I decorate both sides of the room identically, but this year I enjoyed letting each side develop its own variation of the same moody palette.

A Witchy Halloween Scene in the Solarium

The solarium may be the most overtly witchy space in the house this year.

It started with a strand of purple lights. As I was hanging them, my eyes landed on the rustic chandelier overhead — and suddenly the leftover Spanish moss from our Kiawah Island Wedding favors seemed like the perfect addition.

Once the moss went up, the room took on a wonderfully mysterious atmosphere.

From there the scene grew naturally. A tiered stand from IKEA became the perfect perch for small potion bottles and other “witchy” curiosities. I even created little potion labels using a Canva template to complete the display.

A pair of black-and-white pillow covers finished the look. The graphic contrast works beautifully with the darker decor and makes the room feel playful rather than overly spooky.

Classic Vintage Halloween Decor in the Main Spaces

The entry, kitchen, and living room lean into a more classic, nostalgic Halloween style.

Both Mark and I have always loved traditional black-and-orange Halloween decor, and these main spaces reflect that cheerful vintage spirit.

In the entryway, a metal “Wheel of Fortune” decoration from Michael’s invites guests to spin for a positive fortune. Everyone who visits insists on giving it a turn.

Look closely and you might spot a small black bird wearing a witch hat perched near the entry painting — a tiny detail that adds a touch of humor to the display.

Of course, no Halloween at Château Kahn would be complete without our loyal butler, Albert, and his equally dignified dog greeting guests at the door.

Halloween in the Kitchen and Living Room

Moving into the kitchen, the pub table holds a dramatic Z Gallerie candelabra surrounded by one of our classic ceramic pumpkins and a pair of charming ghost salt-and-pepper shakers we discovered at a local garden center.

The living room mantel keeps a few of its usual elements — the orange and black lanterns — but this year I added a draped mantel scarf that instantly gave the display a slightly more theatrical feel.

It’s one of those simple decorating additions that makes you wonder how you ever styled the space without it.

Perhaps next year a few dangling spiders will make an appearance.

A Final Stop on the Halloween House Tour

Those are some of the highlights from this year’s Halloween decorating at Château Kahn.

Each room carries a slightly different atmosphere — from dark academia in the dining room to witchy charm in the solarium and classic Halloween nostalgia in the main spaces.

Which room would you spend the most time in?

Wishing you a wonderfully spooky Halloween.
