DIY Decoupage Candles: Elegant Chinoiserie Taper Tutorial

DIY Decoupage Candles: A TikTok Favorite

This simple craft has quietly become my most popular TikTok project — with over 14,000 views and hundreds of saves.

And I understand why.

These DIY decoupage candles feel elevated, personal, and completely customizable — yet they’re surprisingly easy to make.

While I chose a classic blue-and-white Chinoiserie motif, this technique works beautifully with florals, toile, seasonal prints, or even custom monograms.

The only non-negotiable?

Use flameless candles.

Decoupage taper candles are a chic and easy DIY project.
Made for a Holiday display, but the classic Chinoiserie will be perfect all year long.

Why Flameless Candles Are the Smart Choice

Yes, you can decoupage onto real wax candles.

No, I do not recommend burning them.

Paper + Mod Podge + flame is not a combination I’m willing to test in the name of ambiance.

Modern faux candles — especially the Homemory brand I use — offer:

  • Realistic flicker
  • Long battery life
  • Built-in timers
  • Zero fire risk

They’ve earned a permanent place in my styling toolkit.

I still use real candles for intimate dinner tables.
But for everyday ambiance or gifting? Flameless wins.

Supplies for DIY Decoupage Candles

Two Design Approaches

You can create your decoupage candles in two ways:

1. Cut-and-Place Method
Trim out individual motifs and arrange them intentionally around the candle.

2. Wrap Method
Use a full section of napkin pattern and wrap it around the taper.

Both methods use the same application technique — it simply depends on how curated or organic you want the final result to feel.

One method for creating your DIY decoupage candles: use entire napkin pattern as-is.
Wrap Method: Cut and use entire napkin pattern as-is.

How to Make Decoupage Candles

Step 1 | Prep the Napkin

Separate the top printed layer from the backing layers. You only want the thinnest layer for smooth adhesion.

If wrapping the candle, trim the napkin slightly narrower at the top to accommodate the taper shape.

Step 2: Apply Base Layer of Mod Podge

Using a foam brush, apply a thin but even coat of Mod Podge directly to the candle surface.

Work in small sections — especially with tapers.

Step 3: Apply the Napkin

Carefully press the napkin (or cut motifs) onto the glued area.

Smooth gently with clean fingers or the foam brush.

Be delicate — wet napkin paper tears easily.

Step 4: Seal

Brush a light coat of Mod Podge over the napkin to seal it.

Avoid heavy pressure.

Let dry completely.

That’s it.

Ta-Da! I just love the look of these Chinoiserie decoupage candles.

Styling Ideas

These DIY decoupage candles are incredibly versatile:

  • Blue-and-white for Chinoiserie or traditional interiors
  • Floral prints for spring tablescapes
  • Toile for French-inspired rooms
  • Red and green for holiday decor
  • Custom prints for bridal showers or hostess gifts

They elevate everything from casual dinner parties to styled shelves.

Make Them Gift-Worthy

Several TikTok viewers suggested turning these into gifts — and I agree.

Bundle two tapers with velvet ribbon.
Add a handwritten tag.
Coordinate napkin patterns with the recipient’s decor style.

They feel thoughtful without being complicated.

Final Thoughts

What I love most about these decoupage candles is their flexibility.

They’re quick enough for a craft night.
Elegant enough for entertaining.
Personal enough for gifting.

And once you make one set, you’ll immediately start imagining the next.
