Capsule Wardrobe Tips: Closet Cleanout 103

What Is a Capsule Wardrobe — Really?

Welcome to Closet Cleanout 103: Building a Capsule Wardrobe.

Let’s break down what a capsule wardrobe actually means — and how I interpret it in real life (not Pinterest fantasy land).

Welcome to the final installment of my closet organization guides: Building a Capsule Wardrobe.

Caroline Joy of Unfancy defines a capsule wardrobe as:

“A mini wardrobe made up of really versatile pieces you totally LOVE to wear.”

In its strictest form, a capsule wardrobe limits you to a set number of items — often around 37 pieces — including tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, and shoes.

The goal?
Maximum outfit combinations.
Minimal decision fatigue.

If you’ve completed:

You should already love what you own and know at least three ways to style most pieces.

The capsule wardrobe concept simply takes that logic further. The same principles I use in a capsule wardrobe apply to home styling — fewer, better pieces that work together.

The Pinterest Version (And Why I Don’t Follow It)

I use the pretty capsule wardrobe guides on Pinterest mostly for planning vacation outfits.

I love a good “Effortless French Girl Capsule” board.

I use them all the time — for vacation packing.

But for daily life?

There is no way in hell I’m reducing my closet to 37 items.

I love clothes. I love shoes. I love variety.

And more importantly: my life requires variety.

If your life includes:

  • Travel
  • Events
  • Work
  • Activewear
  • Casual days
  • Date nights
  • Family gatherings

Then forcing everything into one hyper-minimal capsule may not serve you.

How I Actually Use the Capsule Wardrobe Concept

Instead of one ultra-minimal capsule, I create situational capsules within my closet.

Think:

  • Activewear capsule
  • Polished daytime capsule
  • Social/event capsule
  • Date-night capsule
  • At-home capsule
Building a capsule wardrobe starts with identifying what you're actually wearing in your life.
Hannah’s Wardrobe breakdown is similar to my own.

Each section contains pieces that work together and reflect how I actually get dressed.

This approach aligns with something Hannah Louise Poston talks about:
Your wardrobe should match your lifestyle.

When you analyze what you truly wear each month, you may notice imbalances.

For example:

  • I own more “dressy” pieces than I technically need.
  • I wear activewear more than almost anything else.

That awareness doesn’t force me to purge — but it does guide future shopping decisions.

And that’s where the capsule wardrobe becomes powerful.

Capsule Wardrobe Tips That Actually Work

Here are three capsule wardrobe tips that are realistic and sustainable:

1. Audit What You Actually Wear

Not what you wish you wore.
Not what your Pinterest board suggests.

What do you truly reach for in a given month?

If 60% of your life is casual or active — build accordingly.

A capsule wardrobe should reflect your life as it exists today.

2. Test a Mini Capsule Before You Commit

If you want to try to pare your wardrobe down to 37/45/50 pieces, do it. Just store your other clothing items instead of getting rid of them.

Instead of purging everything else:

  • Box up the extra pieces.
  • Store them out of sight.
  • Live with the smaller wardrobe for a full season.

If you don’t reach for the stored pieces?
That’s data.

Hannah’s video “How to Find Your Personal Style” is a soft landing if you’re struggling to condense your closet.

3. Use a Visual Tool to Maximize What You Own

A capsule wardrobe thrives on outfit combinations.

I use The Stylebook Closet App to:

  • Track what I wear
  • Build outfits in advance
  • Identify gaps
  • Avoid impulse purchases

Instead of scrolling and shopping online, I play with what I already own.

That shift alone can transform your closet.

The Real Goal of a Capsule Wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe isn’t about deprivation.

It’s about:

  • Clarity
  • Intentional shopping
  • Confidence in getting dressed
  • Reduced mental clutter

Whether your capsule is 37 pieces or 137 pieces is entirely up to you.

The real win?

Opening your closet and feeling excited — not overwhelmed.

When getting dressed feels quick, aligned, and effortless — you’ve done it right.
